Bio - Musical

Ryan Carney is a bassist, cellist and music educator with over 35 years of experience studying and performing diverse styles of music. A graduate of Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Music Performance and also of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University with a Master of Music, Ryan concentrated on classical and jazz string bass performance. Carney primarily studied with Greg Sarchet (Chicago Lyric Opera), John Floeter (Chicago Sinfonietta, Joffrey Ballet, Elgin Symphony, Lake Forest Symphony, Grant Park Symphony), Marlene Rosenberg, Bruce Bransby (Kansas City Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic ) and many others. Ryan has performed with countless professional ensembles including the Rockford Symphony, Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Chamber Orchestra, Polish-American Symphony, Kishwaukee Symphony, Chicago Classic Symphony, among others.

In addition to performing bass and cello as a member of Antony +The Tramps (since 2012), Carney is actively featured in numerous creative ensembles and recording projects.  When not rehearsing or performing, Ryan enjoys teaching and inspiring young talent, working privately with musicians in the Fox Valley.  Ryan’s students have accomplished a variety of personal successes not limited to most improved awards presented by their schools, community and school orchestra audition wins, chair advancements, placements in leading ensembles and division one solo ensemble competition performances and auditions for nationally recognized colleges and music institutions.

In 2018, Carney was the Associate Director for the Kaneland Youth Orchestra working with young musicians who lack music programs provided by their schools.  With a private music teaching background that spans more than 25 years, Ryan leads free master classes and music clinics several times each year in schools and around the Fox Valley community. For many students, masterclasses provide their first opportunity to perform as a soloist.

Carney performs throughout the Fox Valley and Chicago areas with his band, Antony And The Tramps, as well as with the Ryan Carney Cello Trio featuring Shannon Collins Adams on piano and Christopher Palmerin on cajon for private parties and special events.  The Ryan Carney Cello Trio performs everything from classical cello sonatas to famous melodies by The Beatles, Chris Cornell and many others. In 2017, Ryan was featured for performances and recording projects with Noah Gabriel and Elliott Waits For No One

Music is a healing power that can have astonishing effects on the brain. It can bridge speech patterns back together and help to balance emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.  Ryan works with kids of all ages and talents to explore the effects of music on the brain and how it can improve test scores, regain memory loss, reduce anxiety and more.

Antony And The Tramps

@lostramps

Antony And The Tramps received great reviews for their sophomore album – Digital Arms. Richard Milne of Chicago’s WXRT radio broadcast honored the five-piece ensemble as being among the top 12 of the year (2016) and welcomed Tramps as a featured artist for his renowned weekly Local Anesthetic broadcast.  Antony And The Tramps have released a documentary and numerous music videos with more in the works.

Prior to Covid, Antony And The Tramps had been packing venues and festivals including a debut at Milwaukee's 2016 Summerfest, a number of headlined XRT sponsored performances such as Chicago RibFest, Oak Park's Oaktoberfest, Taste of Chicago, sold out shows at Lincoln Hall, House of Blues, Schubas and others.  The musical caliber and songwriting flexibility of Antony And The Tramps is trademarked not only by their unusually artistic sounds with stratospheric electric energy, unpredictable instrumentation and beautifully layered three-part vocal harmonies, but also as a transformative acoustic ensemble. Tramps are best described as cinematic with extreme sensitivity and attention to detail.

In 2019, Antony And The Tramps  released a new collection of songs called OUT OF TIME, featuring Carney on cello and bass.  During this time, new songs with lyric videos were released via YouTube.  Discover more at www.AntonyAndTheTramps.com

Ryan Carney Cello Trio

The Ryan Carney Cello Trio offers an unexpectedly fun and elegant repertoire ranging from baroque and classical cello sonatas to jazz standards and famous pop melodies by The Beatles, Billy Joel, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Chris Cornell and a scrolling list of others. The sounds of familiar melodies fill space with joy and creates a great ambiance for wedding processionals, cocktail hours and other occasions. The musical experiences that we create are very customizable, ranging from formal and ceremonial with either solo cello or a cello and piano duet, to extremely casual, playful and modern. Performances can be unlike anything you might expect, inclusive of multi-instrument looping techniques using synthesizers, bass, guitar, cello, and percussion with layers of sound that interchangeably create beautiful and energetic soundscapes that are improvised over in real-time. It's dramatically different than anything else out there and creates a very unique, lasting memory of the experience. I would be interested to learn more about your special event so that I can customize my performance appropriately.
